Cambodia had one hell of a 20th Century. From the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975, the Vietnamese invasion in 1979, and even as late as 1998 there were still KR guerilla scirmishes in the north and the west. The aftermath of all this has left parts of Cambodia still heavily mined, and the human evidence can be seen in most towns and villages passed through. The staggering contrast between the governing class high rollers and the dirt poor locals are sights not easily forgotten.

Welcome to the Kingdom Of Cambodia - One of the world's poorest, and my favourite countries.
Cambodian Beer: It's not much of a challenge trying to find yourself a beer in Cambodia. Angkor is the national beer, and available bottled just about everywhere. If it's draught beer you looking for - no surprise that it's called Draught Angkor, but you'll only find it in the major cities: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, the later being where the brewery is located.

Other good calls are Beer Lao and Tiger, all very drinkable and all very cheap. Most restaurants and large bars have "beer girls", each promoting a particular brand; always friendly and always there to top up the jug of whatever brand they're promoting. You won't need to look for them - trust me they will find you.
Cambodian Wines and Spirits: Locally it's really Rice Wine, some of which is seriously strong - but it's rude not to taste. Spirits produced locally are best given a miss or seen as a cheap route to oblivion, depending on your plan for the evening. Much the same can also be advised on "Muscle Wines" - growing in popularity, and best summed up as Redbull meets Absinthe. Joking aside, drink this either never or with absolute care and definitely with friends around to look after you.
Tap Water - Wash in it yes. Drinking it: NO do NOT, that's NO.
