As party towns go, Phnom Penh has really started to move up a gear or two in the last five years, and we love it.
Most places are within easy reach of each other, and a day’s worth of good walking between bars will do you the world of good before the sun goes down and you head through till dawn.
Remember Phnom Penh is not all that large so you're never going too be to far from where you started. But if your only in town for a few days (as many are) before heading up to Siem Reap and the Angkor complex, get out your map and find Street 51 (The Strip), Street 104 and Sisowath (the Riverfront). |
You'll find the riverfront area has the greatest number and variety of places with dozens of bars and restaurants stretching along Sisowath Quay. At the north end of the riverfront area, Street 104 has a growing number of sports bars and good restaurants. And there is another little huddle of hostess bars at the corner of Street 108 and Norodom Blvd. Late night, especially very late night, Street 51 between Streets 154 and 174 is the place to be.
More than a dozen bars including the Walkabout, Shanghai and Heart of Darkness are squeezed along a couple of blocks. The street is busiest after midnight with some places open past 4:00AM. Street 51 is also the best place to get a midnight snack. The Walkabout kitchen is open 24 hours and there are a couple of food wagons serving burgers, skewers and hot dogs that sit in front of Howie Bar and stay open till 4:30am. |
