 Off the southern coast of China, 70 km from Hong Kong, is the island territory of Macau: the Asian Las Vegas. Formerly a Portuguese colony, Macau (also spelled “Macao”) is the oldest European settlement in China. Macau has come a long way since the clipper ships, Indian merchants and Portuguese settlers used this small safe inlet of a port.
“Macau” loosely means “Gateway” or “Door". And a perfect name that is: Macau history shows that its role has been exactly that, a gateway between East and West.
